contents Monograph Bibliography Building in History. D'Aniello, Charles A. Annotated Bibliographies Guides History Information Needs Information Utilization Library Instruction Orientation Materials Reference Materials Use Studies An outline of reference works on history is presented, with emphasis on those bibliographies which provide appropriate research tools and methodologies without restriction to a particular library. The guide is presented in six sections. Section I identifies guides to bibliographies and sources of bibliographies including standard historical bibliographies, complete and/or selective bibliographies, and evaluative and/or descriptive works. Section II suggests references which explain how to update and evaluate a bibliography by examining factors such as date of compilation, bias of author, and type of material missing from the compilation. Section III stresses the importance of special library catalogues. Section IV explains how to use bibliographies compiled by various national bibliographic systems to provide information on specific subjects. Sketches of national bibliography compilations of the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany are presented. Section V recommends research handbooks which discuss the basic design and mechanics of card catalogues. The final section offers information on using Interlibrary Loan and the Center for Research Libraries. (DB)
