contents Beyond Day 1: The Future of the Catalog. Papers Presented at a Cataloging Committee Program, June 7, 1978. Academic Libraries Cataloging Higher Education Library Catalogs Library Services Research Libraries These papers presented at a program by the Boston Library Consortium Cataloging Committee had three objectives: to present basic non-technical information on the implications for member libraries of the decision by the Library of Congress to close its catalog and to adopt AACR2; to emphasize the need to make decisions in the next two years on card catalog alternatives; and to provide all consortium staff with the opportunity to discuss the issues and options as they relate to serials, reader services, or other areas of a library system. The four papers reprinted here constituted the initial half of the program. The first covered the decision to freeze the Library of Congress catalog and adopt AACR2 and the effect on libraries using LC products. The second described alternative methods for maintaining the card catalog after Day 1. The third discussed the various automated alternatives to the card catalog, and the final paper was concerned with the management of the pre-AACR2 card catalog and how to link old and new catalogs. Small discussion groups focusing on the implications of AACR2 for various library functions concluded the program. (Author/RAA)
