Industry Library Education Library Expenditures Research and Development Centers Special Libraries Statistical Surveys Students This report presents supplementary statistical information characterizing industrial special libraries and backs up conclusions made in the journal article of the same title appearing in the May 1980 issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science (JASIS); this in turn updates an article published in May 1977. JASIS publications priorities in 1980 prevented publication of the full statistical information presented here, which must be used in conjunction with the article and is referenced to it. This study argues that Fortune "500" industry groups are superior to those of Business Week "600" in delineating the industrial special library universe; the reclassified BW "600" figures for R&D expenditures can show that corporations with libraries spend five times as much on R&D as those without them; and that the per capita expenditures for the former corporations have a mean of $1,006 annually as compared to $615 for corporations without libraries. Thirteen tables and two sub-tables detail the expenditures for industry groups in 1978 Fortune "500," 1975 Fortune "500," and their equivalents for BW "600" corporations. This database is considered appropriate for library school student practice in the application of the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences. (Author/RAA)
