- Folkebiblioteket Og Befolkningen. The Public Library and the Population. Kuhl, P-H Munk, Jens Kristian Adults Attitudes Children Educational Background Foreign Countries Leisure Time Library Circulation Library Surveys Public Libraries Use Studies Published in Danish with an English abstract and summary, this report amplifies the information on the use of public libraries included in previous leisure time research by describing a survey of more than 4,000 members of the Danish population. Users as well as non-users were interviewed, including children. The report is subdivided according to age: adults, older school children, younger school children, and preschool children, and contains sections dealing with non-users. Informal talks with users at libraries and with non-users in their homes are described. The study found that one-half the population uses the public library, but that the incidence decreases with age from a maximum of 84 percent among older school children to 30 percent among persons about 70 years. It also found that the higher the density of the population, the greater the percentage of library users, and that the most conclusive factor is the person's length of educational background. The study examined the attitude of the population toward libraries as well, finding it to be very favorable. Captions in English are provided for tables displaying the findings throughout the text.
