- Guide to the Papers in the John Hunter Walker Collection, 1911-1953. Carlson, Douglas W. And Others Archives Indexes Letters (Correspondence) Library Collections Library Research Primary Sources Unions United States History This guide to the papers of John Hunter Walker (1872-1955) which are housed in the Illinois Historical Survey Library includes a biographical sketch of this prominent Illinois labor leader and key figure in both the Illinois State Federation of Labor and the United Mine Workers of America; an organizational statement explaining the acquisition of the collection, how and why it was reorganized, and the types of material found in each section; a container list providing a detailed outline of the collection and giving inclusive folder numbers for each segment; chronological synopses of the issues or events discussed in the correspondence; and a name index which includes all personal and corporate names in the correspondence with cross references. Coordinated use of the name index, chronological summaries, and the container list permit the identification of correspondents, the time period in which the correspondence occurred, and the major issues discussed. While organizational records and other papers acquired throughout his career are included, the correspondence constitutes more than half of the collection. (RAA)
