Time allotment is from four to six hours of classroom time. The objective of this capsule is to investigate the chemical safety of household products by teaching students how to form a hypothesis through the utilization of inference, observation, library resources, and resource people. It also requires them to make careful observations and collect and accurately record data by conducting a survey. The material is presented in two sections. Section I emphasizes the scientific method. Thirteen activities involve students in reading, forming a hypothesis, writing a hypothesis, defining inference, finding and identifying resource persons, writing bibliographies, listing sources, and discussing. Section II focuses on data collecting and recording. Seven activities include listing areas of the home, identifying potential trouble spots, drawing floor plans, and listing ingredients of and warnings for products. The teacher's guide provides advance preparation information, objectives, keys to activities and tests, a bibliography, and copies of all worksheets and assessments. (CK)
