And Others Administrator Education Communication Skills Group Dynamics Institutes (Training Programs) Interpersonal Relationship Librarians Library Administration Middle Management Professional Continuing Education Staff Development An institute held December 10-16, 1978, in the United States Virgin Islands, trained 25 middle-level library administrators in the use of communications as a management tool. The institute was part of an on-going program of staff development in a multi-cultural, disadvantaged area. The program was based on these objectives: (1) to introduce basic theory and practice of group dynamics to the library professional, (2) to encourage the concept of the librarian as administrator, and (3) to aid library managers in applying basic business and managerial techniques. The institute opened with the identification of management problems common to the participants, and each day's program focused on a particular topic, e.g., perception and language, managerial styles, the timeline technique, adaptation to change, rewards and motivators, and negotiation. Participants evaluated the program each day, and their opinions are summarized in the report. Appendices contain a list of participants and staff, promotional materials, a detailed evaluation report, and an institute agenda. (SW)
