The concepts of literature search, search strategy, primary and secondary information sources, and topic selection are explained. Discussion of searching the book literature covers using the location of books in the university library, and material evaluation. The steps in searching periodical information are also explained, including use of indexes and abstracts, location of periodicals in the library, and evaluation of periodical information. The use of newspaper indexes and government publications is discussed briefly, as well as other reference sources such as directories, bibliographies, and handbooks; examples of each type of publication are given. Suggestions for bibliography compilation are presented, and the appendices include a map of the campus, library schedule, glossary of literature search terms, and a literature search outline to guide the student in developing and recording his/her search strategy.
