Eisenberg, Elizabeth Stacey Card Catalogs Cataloging Classification Indexing Library Technical Processes Subject Index Terms This study of the variation in use of uniform titles from one library to another and even within a card catalog, a practice sanctioned by Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR), examines the validity of this variation in use of uniform titles, and explains how a uniform title is selected and its preferred form is determined. A discussion of the decision to use a uniform title includes a definition and developmental history of the uniform title concept. The relation of uniform titles to the functions of the catalog is explored, with sample entries as illustrations of how uniform titles contribute to a logical, structured catalog. AACR criteria on the need to use uniform titles are discussed and evaluated, and such practical issues as when and how to implement uniform titles, and their selection and form, are addressed. The study concludes that all types of libraries should use a uniform title when cataloging a work which has been issued under more than one title in various manifestations. (Author/SW)
