contents University Faculty Institute Emphasizes Basic Skills in the Content Areas. McPhail, Irving P. Basic Skills Faculty Development High Risk Students Higher Education Institutes (Training Programs) Interdisciplinary Approach Program Descriptions Program Design Teacher Attitudes Teaching Methods The purpose of this paper is to describe an institute on basic skills that was organized for faculty members at a historically black, public, four-year, urban-oriented, "open admissions" college. Specifically, the described institute was designed to develop positive faculty attitudes toward incorporating the teaching of basic skills into the content areas and to teach the faculty members specific instructional practices to use with their students. The first part of the paper discusses the institute's program design, which included addresses by guest speakers; general procedures helpful in all content areas; workshop sessions dealing with expository writing, basic mathematics, reading/study strategies in various content areas, library usage, and speech communication; a general faculty meeting; and department meetings. The second section of the paper discusses the faculty members' evaluation of the institute, which was positive. (FL)
