- Censorship: Professional Improvement Packet. Academic Freedom Censorship Elementary Secondary Education Freedom of Speech Moral Issues Parent Grievances Parent School Relationship Reading Material Selection Textbook Selection A variety of resource documents and articles are included in this professional improvement packet that is designed to assist teachers and administrators in reducing the conditions under which censorship might occur. The documents presented are: the Indiana code laws concerning textbook adoption; the American Library Association's library bill of rights, resolution on challenged materials, and statement on "labeling"; forms for requesting new materials and for reconsideration of instructional materials; a checklist for survival against censorship; and a model statement for academic freedom in collective bargaining contracts. A position paper on censorship, a discussion of selection versus censorship, and a collection of case studies are offered, along with several ways of dealing with censorship. More specific articles examine the Gabler crusade against "improper" textbooks, Indiana State Senator Grubbins's position on education, and the various targets of textbook pressure groups. An application for the Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom and an extensive bibliography are also included. (JK)
