contents Wakefield: Community and Library Analysis. Trumpeter, Margo C. Donahue, Mary Ellen Community Characteristics Community Study Information Needs Library Collections Library Planning Library Services Needs Assessment Public Libraries Self Evaluation (Groups) Use Studies This community analysis was conducted in order to characterize and identify the information needs of the Wakefield community, and library services and use were evaluated to determine how well the library meets these needs. The study included an examination of the history of the town and its physical characteristics, economic development, and information resources. A profile was developed of recreational activities and educational activities for several age groups, and population trends were studied. Statistical analysis included segmentation of age, population, income, and educational level by census tract. The evaluation of the library is prefaced by a history of the development of the Wakefield public library system and a review of its organization and governance. Use patterns at each of the three branches were studied, and services and collections were profiled. The characteristics of library users and collections for three age levels were also analyzed at each of the branches. Main conclusions of the study are concerned with a need to set goals and objectives for the library, and the importance of clear lines of accountability. (SW)
