Bibliographies Community Information Services Information Services Library Role Library Services Library Surveys Outreach Programs Public Libraries Questionnaires Reference Services Referral Social Services This study surveys the current involvement of public libraries in the provision of information and referral services to the communities they serve. Data were gathered via questionnaire from 125 public libraries nationwide to ascertain their level of involvement in advocacy, case management or tracking, direct client interviewing, escort services, service evaluation, follow-up, information dissemination to agencies, public information, referral, and statistical reporting. The remainder of the data concerns funding, staff, administrative position, limitation of service, budget, serviced area, hours of service per week, and service influence on overall library usage and goals. A literature review and a description of the study's methodology precede a summary of findings. Appendices include samples of cover letters mailed to libraries, a sample questionnaire, a list of libraries responding to the survey, and a selected bibliography. (FM)
