contents The Library Skills Learning Package: An Evaluation. Jenkins, Kathleen H. Bibliographies Higher Education Learning Modules Library Instruction Library Skills Program Effectiveness Program Evaluation Questionnaires Search Strategies Student Attitudes Summative Evaluation Teaching Methods This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Library Skills Learning Package, a printed, self-contained instructional program consisting of explanations and procedures for use of specific library resources and exercises which require the student to use a source in order to answer the questions. It was tested in a special communications class offered at Eastern Illinois University in the spring of 1978. The evaluation tested two null hypotheses: that students displayed no significant attitudes toward the effectiveness of the package, and that there was no significant difference in the scores obtained by the students on the pretest and posttest. Attitude measurement was accomplished by means of a questionnaire completed anonymously at the conclusion of the instruction. Pretests and posttests measured student knowledge of basic library skills before and after instruction. Findings indicated that the majority of students completing the instruction did feel that the package was effective, and that students completing the package evinced an improvement in posttest scores. Appendices provide copies of the student evaluation questionnaire, the pretest and posttest, and the learning package itself. A bibliography lists 31 sources. (FM)
