contents Evaluation of Reference Service in College of Advanced Education Libraries in New South Wales. Schmidt, Janine B. Academic Libraries Evaluation Methods Higher Education Information Seeking Library Research Library Services Reference Services Summative Evaluation User Satisfaction (Information) This investigation of a methodology for evaluating the reference effectiveness of academic libraries in New South Wales tests the answering of questions with a set of 10 questions seeking general background information on a range of topics. Student volunteers pose the questions by unobtrusive methods to reference staff at three college libraries. The results, while precluding generalization because of small sample size, indicate there is a 50 percent chance of receiving a satisfactory reply. Factors affecting the results include the education and training of the librarians, and, to a lesser extent, the collection content. The study recommends extension of the study and further investigation of relevant factors. A bibliography of 47 references is included. (Author/RAA)
