Chen, Ching-chih Hernon, Peter Information Needs Information Seeking Information Sources Library Role Regional Characteristics Tables (Data) Use Studies User Satisfaction (Information) This report presents the findings of a study conducted between July and October 1979 to analyze the information needs of New England citizens, their information seeking patterns, and the effectiveness of libraries in meeting those needs. It examines everyday information needs, both occupational and non-occupational, of adult residents from 2,400 randomly selected households, 400 per state, who participated in telephone interviews lasting an average of 15 minutes. The interviews were designed to gather data on situations requiring information, the behavior of information seekers, the types and varieties of source providers consulted, the perceived level of satisfaction with source providers, the reasons for library use and non-use, and barriers encountered in the information search. It was found that New England residents infrequently consulted libraries as information resources, that many respondents considered libraries to be irrelevant to their information needs, and that libraries were used most by people who fell within a few occupational categories. Five references are cited, and tables display the data collected. (FM) |
