Foreign Countries Languages Library Services Public Libraries Recordkeeping Reference Services Telephone Communications Systems Use Studies This report describes a study undertaken to identify the types of telephoned reference questions received by the Languages Centre of the Metropolitan Toronto Library. In April 1980 two samples of one-week's duration were taken from reference staff records indicating the number of telephone calls in or about a particular language and the day on which they were received. Of the 102 inquiries recorded over a ten day period, 20 percent were related to French, and 58 percent were factual or translation questions. The majority were one-step inquiries that took less than five minutes to answer. The report displays summary data, describes an earlier study of telephoned reference questions, and offers recommendations for future study. Appendices list the languages about which queries were received, detail reference staff instructions for gathering statistics, and provide sample forms. Three references are cited. (FM) |
