Larson, Thelma Academic Libraries Inservice Education Library Administration Library Education Library Technicians Paraprofessional Personnel Recognizing the paraprofessional as a valued asset for the accomplishment of routine library services and techniques while freeing the professional librarian for those duties truly requiring a professional education, this paper presents academic library administrators with an inservice training handbook to prepare and improve the skills of library technicians. The first of four parts presents the basic philosophy of paraprofessional utilization, emphasizing reference service and the increasing importance of automated processes in the library. The second examines the particulars of reference service, and discusses supervisory and personnel administrative functions while highlighting the importance of stress prevention. Job orientation, inservice training techniques, learning models, and guidelines for planning and presenting instruction in part three provide administrators and professional librarians with resource tools to develop a viable training program for the paraprofessional. The final part presents operational techniques for decision making, reference service, research strategy, patron interviewing, the use of learning activity packages, and evaluations for on-the-job improvement of paraprofessional skills. An appendix presents a study on the effect of repetition on learning and retention of library knowledge. In addition to a subject divided bibliography of over 140 titles, each part and the appendix list references applicable to the topic considered. (RAA) |
