contents Study and Development of Mechanized Indexing Procedures That Can Be Applied to the Production of Subject-Enhanced Keyword Indexes. Final Report. Mischo, William H. Automatic Indexing College Libraries Computer Programs Higher Education Library Catalogs Library Collections Online Systems Permuted Indexes Reference Materials Subject Index Terms This paper describes a computer-assisted printed index which provides expanded subject access to the more than 6000 titles in the Iowa State University Library reference collection. Designed to complement existing catalogs with a minimum of duplication of information, the index displays abbreviated length records. The limitations of subject access to reference materials via Library of Congress Subject Headings are discussed, and a system for assigning subject descriptors to reference titles is described. Central to the project are custom designed software routines that expedite data entry, minimize keyboarding, and use a combinatorial-based method to produce multiple entry points from single input strings. Included as appendices are an example page from the reference collection index, a list of form and content designators, sample catalog card revisions, and the program for a keyword out of context (KWOC) index. There are 21 references. (Author/RAA)
