| contents | Evolution of a Catalogue: From Folio to Fiche. Report on the Research Library Catalogue Project. Manthorne, Jane, Ed. Cataloging Change Strategies Federal Aid Library Automation Library Catalogs Library Collections Microfiche Public Libraries Research Libraries The Editing, Photoduplicating, and Distributing of the Research Library Catalogue of Boston Public Library Project, which is described in this report, was supported by grants awarded under the Strengthening Research Library Resources Program, Title II-C of the Higher Education Act of 1965 administered by the Office of Libraries and Learning Resources. Divided into two parts, the report first traces the history of the library from a gift of 50 volumes from the City of Paris to the City of Boston in 1843, to 3,000,000 volumes in 1979 when this rehabilitation project was undertaken. As the collection and catalog grew, the history of the Boston Public Library paralleled the evolution of modern cataloging processes, and the second part of the report describes the activities of the first phase of the project, as catalog cards were translated into microfiche in order to preserve millions of deteriorating bibliographic records, expand access to the research collections of the Boston Public Library, and offer insights to other research libraries planning to integrate newer styles of cataloging into existing bibliographic files. The major phases of the project are briefly reviewed and presented as a chart. (RAA) |
