Developing Nations Global Approach Information Needs Information Services Information Systems International Organizations International Programs Libraries Library Role National Programs Technology Transfer Formed by a merger of two existing UNESCO programs--NATIS and UNISIST--a Division of the General Information Program (PGI) was created in 1977 to respond to problems involved in the development and promotion of scientific and technological information systems and services, as well as the development of national information infrastructures. This latter problem and the education and training of specialists in and users of information are its primary concerns. Other concerns include the promotion of information policies and plans formulation at national, regional, and international levels; the promotion and dissemination of methods, norms, and standards for information handling; and the development of specialized information systems in the fields of education, culture and communication, and the natural and social sciences. An International Council composed of 30 countries helps to ensure that PGI responds to the real needs and concerns of the 150 member states. PGI also provides a forum for UNESCO member states, UN agencies with information systems, and international non-governmental professional organizations. (RBF)
