"Country Schools as Historic Sites" describes the early schools as they were, and discusses the consolidation of Utah's school districts and the various uses which have been made of the early schools. "Country Schools as Community Centers" describes the multiple uses of school buildings in small towns. "Teachers: Their Roles, Rules, and Restrictions" discusses the requirements for teacher certification, problems of teacher turnover and recruitment, low salaries and restrictions, and the role of the teacher in the classroom and the community. "Reading, Writing, 'Rithmetic and Recitation" discusses school subjects and teaching methods in small schools, availability of instructional materials, and recesses. "Country Schools and the Americanization of Ethnic Groups" discusses the prejudices and problems faced by immigrants and American Indians. "Country Schools Today" discusses school consolidation and describes how it was implemented in various areas of Utah. The last paper describes the early one-room school in Garrison, Utah and compares it with a modern one-room school in the same town. (CM) |
