The results indicated that the amount of time students reported reading outside of school per day has decreased slightly since a 1961 study by P. Witty, with females still reading more than males. As in the Witty study, science fiction and sports were popular with the male students in the present study, with romance stories preferred by the female students. The males ranked "Sports Illustrated" as their favorite magazine, while the females selected fashion magazines as their favorites. The boys preferred thriller comics and the girls preferred humorous comics. Although the students in this study, like those from a 1976 study by D. Stachelek, reported friends, teachers, and bookstores as the sources of ideas for reading material selection, they no longer reported librarians as a major source for such information. As in the past, students ranked watching television, listening to the radio, and going to the movies as their favorite leisure time activities, although listening to the radio replaced television viewing as the number one leisure time activity.
