Island Trees Board of Education, the first such case to be heard by the Supreme Court. In this case, to be decided in the summer of 1982, the school board voted to remove a group of books from school libraries, despite the recommendations of a committee appointed by the board, on the basis of charges raised against the books by a conservative parents' organization. From a review of the major earlier cases it would appear that the most equitable and efficient approach to the book removal controversy involves balancing the student's right to receive information with the school board's right to select curricular materials free from judicial intervention.
