Blindness Braille Comparative Analysis Costs Electronic Equipment Library Services Magnetic Tape Cassettes Participant Satisfaction Reading Material Selection Reading Rate Visual Impairments A study conducted to determine user acceptability of cassette braille systems addressed three concerns: (1) user reaction to the basic concept of cassette braille, (2) the determination of the strong and weak features of the cassette braille machines currently available, and (3) the determination of those features of braille machines which would be desirable in future production. Blind readers from five cities participated in this study, which was initiated in September 1979 and completed in December 1981. They received machines and operating instructions and were asked to keep logs recording their experience with the cassette braille system. They were also interviewed and tested, and asked to complete a questionnaire. The study indicated that the concept of paperless braille appears to have been well received. However, the equipment currently available, as used in this study, needs considerable engineering development before it could be placed into acceptable use. (Author/LLS)
