Administrators Film Libraries Films Financial Support Library Collections Library Cooperation Library Services Library Surveys Public Libraries Use Studies Videotape Cassettes Videotape Recordings In order to collect information that would aid administrators of public library film collections with self-assessment and planning, a questionnaire was sent to administrators of 63 public library film collections, including each of the 23 collections in New York State. Replies were received from representatives of 38 collections; of these 18 were in New York State. Data were tallied and analyzed to determine current trends with respect to film collections in the following areas: collection and circulation growth, financial support, usage patterns (types of users and types of use), the development of cooperative and centralized collections, the impact of video technology, and the short- and long-term prospects for film libraries. Responses indicated that film is a much-used resource that serves a large and diverse audience. A majority of respondents also indicated that demand for and circulation of film collections is increasing. Heaviest users of film collections were found to be service organizations or agencies such as day care centers, hospitals, and adult clubs. Many responding libraries had suffered budget cutbacks which affected film services. In the opinion of most respondents, the long-term future of public library film collections depends on the development and standardization of video technology. Data are presented in seven tables.
