The following topics are addressed: passports and visas for officially sponsored and privately sponsored students and scholars; immunizations; travel money; customs regulations; what to take; arrangements to be made with the U.S. host institution; locating on-campus or off-campus housing; academic registration; services available at the campus; written sources of information; classes; credits/grades/degrees; library/reserve books/departmental libraries; the academic calendar; graduate programs; academic vocabulary; social recreational activities; travel within and outside the United States; health care/insurance; eating establishments and dining customs in the United States; transportation and communications; money and banking; stores and other facilities; safety precautions; U.S. immigration regulations; U.S. income tax liability and social security; Chinese embassy and consulates in the United States; characteristics of Americans and American society; and leaving the United States. Appendices include a sample arrival/departure record form and U.S. customs declaration form; a list of common vocabulary used on U.S. campuses; a post-admission/pre-arrival checklist; and a list of locations of U.S. Education reference collections in China.
