Harold Institutional Characteristics Institutional Evaluation Intermediate Grades Junior High Schools Middle Schools School Organization As an aid and reference for administrators, quotes and extracts from 122 documents have been assembled by the author to summarize the arguments over the relative merits of junior high schools as opposed to middle schools. The materials are drawn from a literature search of the ERIC system, the National Diffusion Network, library resources, and journals. Section 1 presents quotes from research studies and opinion pieces giving 32 advantages of junior high schools. Section 2 responds with 31 quotes mentioning the disadvantages of junior high schools. Middle schools' advantages are put forward in 23 quotes in section 3, while the fourth section volleys back with 37 quotes noting the disadvantages of middle schools. The final section sums up the argument with ten lengthier quotes and a chart that contrasts the emphases of middle schools and junior high schools.
