Following a short introduction to the function of collection development policies is a general statement of the primary and secondary collection development goals of the library. Criteria for the selection and withdrawal of library materials are then outlined. General policies concerning materials exceeding $100.00 in cost, out-of-print and facsimile materials, foreign language materials, and gifts are also presented, as well as specific format and collection policies with respect to archival items, audiovisual materials, curriculum materials, dissertations, government documents, microforms, reference materials, serials, series publications, special collections, and vertical file materials. Appended to the document are a series of policy statements by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Educational Film Library Association. These include the "Freedom to Read Statement," the "Library Bill of Rights," the "Intellectual Freedom Statement," and "Freedom to View." Also appended are a glossary of terms used in the document and a statement on the appraisal of library materials. (JL)
