Computer Literacy Computer Oriented Programs Elementary Secondary Education Library Role Literature Reviews Media Specialists Microcomputers Public Schools School Libraries State Federal Aid Surveys Technological Advancement In order to study the concept of computer literacy and its implications for education, a review was made of the relevant professional, trade, and technical literature, with emphasis on information printed from 1978 to the present which highlights the development, growth, and present status of computer literacy in public schools. Recent developments in computer technology were explored, and educational user groups were contacted to determine current activities and their implications. Presented in essay form, the study includes discussions of the Information Age, international and national efforts in computer literacy, the pervasiveness of microcomputers, computers in public schools, the role of librarians/school media specialists, the concept of computer literacy, and computer literacy research conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress and the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC). A 47-item selected bibliography is provided, as well as a chart showing the results of a survey of how state governments are promoting computer literacy and the MECC Revised Set of Instructional Objectives for Computer Literacy.
