Elementary Secondary Education Equipment Maintenance Learning Resources Centers Library Administration Library Circulation Library Standards Library Technical Processes Media Selection Media Specialists Questionnaires Records (Forms) School Libraries This guide is designed to help school library media specialists in establishing a media center or to provide new ideas for existing centers. The first section presents media selection information, including sources for ordering; selection guidelines; suggestions for analyzing children's materials for sexism and racism; evaluation criteria (for picture books, fiction and information books, filmstrips, and nonmusical recordings); audiovisual preview policies; purchasing procedures; and an acquisitions flow chart. Procedures for processing and cataloging various types of media are described in the second section. A section on equipment focuses on maintenance and inventory of audiovisual equipment, as well as selection, and processing. Sections on circulation and scheduling and working with teachers and support staff, aides, and volunteers are also provided. Finally, maintenance is discussed and information is provided on inventory, repair, and weeding of materials. In addtion to a glossary and a 3-page bibliography, the Oklahoma standards for library/media centers are included, arranged by level of schools, with regulations and criteria for each. The appendix provides an extensive collection of sample forms for use in library media centers, including assessments, questionnaires, and record-keeping forms. (LMM)
