Academic Libraries Federal Legislation History Humanities Library Associations Library Education Library Services Meetings Preservation Research Libraries Sciences Social Sciences Presentations made at this semiannual meeting include papers on the first 50 years of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the challenge to libraries from changing scholarship, a report from the Library of Congress (LC) on new preservation technologies, and a report on the ARL business meeting. Individual papers address the history of ARL (Stephen A. McCarthy); the influence of ARL on academic librarianship, legislation, and library education (Edward G. Holley); the relationship of ARL and LC (William J. Welsh); and the history and concerns of Canadian research libraries (Marianne Scott). Challenges to libraries from the humanities (Ralph Cohen), the sciences (William K. Hartmann), and the social sciences (Kenneth Prewitt) are outlined, and a subsequent panel discussion and other remarks are recorded. The LC report covers mass deacidification (Peter G. Sparks), optical disk technology (William R. Nugent), and the application of optical disk technology in a pilot project at the LC Cataloging Distribution Service (David G. Remington); discussion on the report is transcribed. Five reports from the business meeting and a revision of ARL bylaws are included. Appendices comprise excerpts from the commemorative program of the 100th meeting; ARL bylaws; two further ARL reports; lists of meeting participants and ARL officers, directors, committees, task forces, and members; and the auditor's report for 1981.
