Cowles, Millie And Others Administrator Role Curriculum Early Childhood Education Kindergarten Parent School Relationship Principals Program Administration Skill Development State Standards To help primary and elementary school principals in South Carolina, this short manual identifies aspects to be considered when developing a kindergarten program. Part 1 discusses the reasons for having kindergartens, lists the skills to be developed in kindergarten (including motor, personal-social, perceptual, auditory, visual, memory, and problem-solving development), and notes the place of kindergarten in the total school curriculum. Part 2 covers the kindergarten curriculum and the principal's role in relation to it, while part 3 elaborates on the principal's administrative role in the kindergarten program and the principal's interpretation of the program to the school community, parents, and the larger community. In part 4, parent-principal relations are examined more closely and specific activities are suggested to help the principal enhance parents' relationship with the school. Part 5 describes the State plan for kindergarten, including the outcomes desired and general requirements for kindergarten materials, schedules, staff, transportation, enrollment, evaluation, parent communications, food service, and library resources. A brief bibliography of resources is appended. (RW)
