| contents | Kansas State University Libraries' OCR Labeling Project. Thierer, Joyce Bower, Merry Academic Libraries Cataloging Character Recognition Classification Flow Charts Higher Education Library Automation Library Circulation Library Technical Processes Optical Scanners Program Descriptions Questionnaires Records (Forms) This publication describes the planning and implementation of an optical character recognition (OCR) labeling project, the first stage of Kansas State University (KSU) Libraries' program of conversion from a manual to an automated circulation system. It is noted that a telephone survey of libraries with automated circulation systems and consideration of the special needs of KSU Libraries were part of the development of the labeling project. Lists of project staff and materials are provided as well as a delineation of the project time sequence and a project organizational chart. Sets of instructions are given for general labeling duties, for label placement, and for resolving cataloging and other problems. The instructions include a labeling flow chart as well as guidelines for locating missing publications and recataloging incorrectly cataloged material. Also provided are sample OCLC cataloging records, examples of correctly labeled items, and sample project worksheets. Summary tables show the number of hours spent on various parts of the labeling project, while an evaluation notes project strengths and possible refinements in the collection of statistics and problem resolution routines. The telephone survey, an explanation of the proper sequencing of call numbers, and a list of project supplies are appended. (Author/ESR) |
