College Libraries Fees Higher Education Information Retrieval Online Systems Policy Recordkeeping Records (Forms) Reference Services Intended for librarians familiar with basic online searching techniques and various vendor protocols, this manual describes and illustrates the policies, record-keeping, and forms used by the online services department of the Woodward Library at Austin Peay State University (APSU). Where specific examples are used, they are given with DIALOG command language. The manual contains seven sections: (1) definitions of online searching terminology; (2) a description of the types of searches generally performed; (3) an explanation of various online search forms and their usage; (4) a description of patron fees and charges; (5) an explanation of the criteria for patron-requested retrospective searches; (6) an outline of actual search routines, from the presearch interview to the collection of fees; and (7) a description of the administrative duties and responsibilities of the librarian in charge of online services. Nine sample online search forms are appended: a search history form, a search request questionnaire, a search log form, a DIALOG monthly invoice, a DIALOG search history sheet, a citation explanation page attached to online search results for patron use, a receipt for payment of online fees and charges, a patron notification form letter used when search results are available, and a sample quarterly report on online services use statistics.
