And Others Glossaries Library Networks Library Services Physical Disabilities Public Libraries Questionnaires Regional Libraries State Libraries User Satisfaction (Information) Visual Impairments This study provides data on the relative effectiveness of library service to the blind and physically handicapped in two adjoining metropolitan counties in Michigan. Oakland County is served by a subregional program located in a local public library while Macomb County is served by the more remote Michigan Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (MRLB/PH), located in the Michigan State Library in Lansing. Field-tested questionnaires in large print were sent to a random sample (1 in 10) of active regional and subregional library users. A 46% response rate was achieved. Information was sought on satisfaction with services, volume of reading, personal contacts with librarians, and use of general services of local public libraries. The study confirmed hypotheses that subregional libraries offer more personalized service than the more remote regional library, and are more successful in locating new readers, maintaining liaison with community groups, and encouraging the mainstreaming of handicapped users into regular library service. Appendices to the report consist of: (1) a selective bibliography; (2) a glossary of terms; (3) a map showing the areas served by the regional and subregional libraries; (4) sample questionnaires and cover letters for the two counties, with responses given; and (5) documents from the Michigan Library Association Task Force on Blind and Physically Handicapped Libraries.
