The main section outlines a process for libraries to use in system selection, including (1) initial considerations; (2) project planning and management; (3) analyzing the alternatives; (4) the selection process; (5) the contract; (6) installing the computer; (7) system implementation; and (8) applications. Appendices provide an annotated list of reading which corresponds to respective sections of the outline, a selected and annotated bibliography of readings on the topic, and a list of sample documents that are available from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's Automation Consultant Office, such as requests for proposals (RFP's)/system specifications, needs analyses, requests for information, contracts, and network agreements.
