Advisory Committees Check Lists Governing Boards Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Planning Public Libraries State Libraries State Programs This booklet provides background information about the Texas library system for both new and experienced system advisory council members and lay representatives. It is noted that most of the material included was previously distributed at the 1980 System Advisory Council Conference. Five sections are presented: (1) "The Public Library and the Texas Library System," by Colonel Charles Nelson; (2) a description of the history of library systems in Texas, including a chronology of events and an excerpt from a 1976 publication concerning library cooperative efforts; (3) "The Texas Library System: Organization, Governance, and Advisory Bodies," by Colonel Charles Nelson; (4) information on the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, the State Librarian, the Texas Library Systems Act Advisory Board, the Systems Study Committee, the Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) Advisory Council, and the Library Development Division of the State Library, including organizational charts, membership lists, descriptions of activities, and checklists of responsibilities and functions, with an additional description of systems operations at the state level; and (5) lists of documents submitted to the Texas State Library and required documents for the Annual Plan of Service.
