| contents | A Study of Periodical Literature Searching at an Urban Research Library: Problems and Patterns. Carey, Kevin Abstracts Academic Libraries Citations (References) Higher Education Indexes Information Retrieval Library Research Library Skills Library Surveys Questionnaires Serials Student Research Use Studies Patron use of periodical indexes at an urban academic research library was studied over a 7-week period in the summer of 1982. A total of 98 patrons were interviewed on a random basis as they used various periodical and newspaper indexes. The questionnaire was designed to gather information on citation elements, the methods patrons use to locate magazines in the library, and their use of the university's serials holdings list. The study's original hypothesis--that many patrons have difficulty with periodical literature searches--was not supported by the data results. Approximately 54% of the patrons were checking indexes for general information. The undergraduates were the largest number of users for general periodical indexes, while graduates used the more specialized subject indexes. People generally tended to use the indexes that were within their academic area of concentration. These and other results are presented in this report, as well as survey methodology and conclusions and problems related to the design of the study. Appendices comprise a sample questionnaire, a master list of indexes, and a map of the index area for periodicals showing the general layout of the reference area. A 50-item bibliography concludes the report. (Author/ESR) |
