Academic Libraries Fees Higher Education Interlibrary Loans Library Cooperation Library Networks Library Services Library Surveys Online Systems Position Papers Questionnaires Records (Forms) Research Libraries State Federal Aid During the summer of 1982, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) surveyed its members regarding their interlibrary loan (ILL) traffic and procedures. A response rate of 97% (110 out of 113 libraries surveyed) was obtained. The survey concentrated on loan charges and changes since a similar l976-77 survey. It was found that 33% of respondents charge for interlibrary loans, that 80% are willing to delete ILL charges for other ARL libraries, that 52% receive subsidies for ILL activities, that access to online systems has revolutionized portions of the ILL process, and that network and consortia interlibrary agreements have increased to an average of 3.9 per library. Following the survey report, sample questionnaires from 1982 and 1976 are provided, as well as a summary of cost recovery and cost factors, and a partial list of special interlibrary loan agreements. Then a series of sample ILL documents from ARL libraries are presented, including 11 policy and procedure statements, 4 examples of user materials, and 7 documents on cooperative agreements and network services. A concise summary of issues and trends related to interlibrary lending, a seven-item bibliography, and an evaluation sheet for this ARL Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit are also provided.
