It is noted that emphasis is placed on concepts rather than mathematical formulas and on reasons for using particular techniques. Topics covered include problem definition; study design; the advantages and disadvantages of using direct observation, historical records, published surveys, interviews, and questionnaires for data collection; the design, administration, and evaluation of questionnaires; random sampling; the tabulation and graphical representation of descriptive statistics; statistical estimation; statistical decisions; variance tests (the F test and analysis of variance); the Chi-Square test; correlation; and regression. Examples are provided of the use of data collection and analysis techniques in libraries. Also provided are a series of 12 problems to be completed, a list of important equations, an 11-item bibliography, and a core list of journals that report the results of research in library science.
