Attitude Measures College Libraries Foreign Students Higher Education Information Seeking Library Instruction Library Research Library Skills Questionnaires User Satisfaction (Information) A study was done in the spring semester of 1983 at the East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, to investigate the attitudes of 28 international students with regard to the importance and effectiveness of a library skills instruction course and their understanding and/or use of other library services and materials. The graduate level, 3-hour credit, library skills course was offered by the university's Center for Educational Media and Technology and provided group and individualized instruction covering information sources and retrieval strategies. An attitudinal questionnaire and scale were administered to students at the conclusion of the course. It was found that all students agreed that the library skills instruction was a good way to learn to use the library; 86% of the students stated that the experience was extremely valuable, that they were confident in using the library, that they had a sense of accomplishment, and that they wanted to suggest to friends that they should take the course. It was also found that the international students had positive attitudes regarding their understanding and use of library services and materials, except for government documents. Included in the report are a list of resources covered by the course, sample survey instruments, and tables showing survey results. (Author/ESR) |
