| contents | Collection Description and Assessment in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 87. Academic Libraries Evaluation Methods Higher Education Library Acquisition Library Collections Library Networks Library Planning Measurement Techniques Research Libraries This group of documents presents material on collection development and a list of collection intensity indicators from the Research Libraries Group (RLG), as well as examples of collection assessment techniques from seven members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). ARL member documents cover the assessment of art periodical, microbiology, Spanish-American literature, and women's studies holdings at Arizona State University; collection assessment planning at Brigham Young University; assessment of French literature, computer science, and United States history holdings at the University of California at San Diego; the results of a book use study at DePauw University; assessment of the sociology collection at the University of Illinois; assessment of the metallurgical engineering collection at the University of Notre Dame; and the general procedures of Stanford University's collection evaluation program. A concise summary of issues and trends describes political and operational incentives for collection assessment; obstacles to assessment programs; and assessment approaches involving the comparison of holdings with authoritative lists of published material, shelf list measurement, cooperative collection development and preservation decisionmaking, measurement of user satisfaction with library holdings, and the use of automated systems in quantitative assessment methods. An evaluation sheet for this ARL Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) kit is also provided. (ESR) |
