Cataloging City Government Computers Foreign Countries Library Automation Library Catalogs Library Circulation Library Personnel Library Planning Library Surveys Public Libraries Tables (Data) A survey of public library authorities located in the 34 London boroughs was conducted during the summer of 1982 to determine the characteristics and extent of library automation and to assess changes since a similar 1978/79 study. Replies were received from 33 authorities, of whom 30 reported using computerized techniques. Information on library automation was also collected from nine library authorities located outside of London. This document presents survey results from each authority in 21 tables and an analysis of present automation practices and changes since 1978/79. Five topics are covered: (1) computer facilities, their limitations, and the use of bureau services and electronic information retrieval systems; (2) cataloging, including specific cataloging routines that are computerized, the type of equipment and other resources used, catalog output, catalog frequency and form, and management information provided; (3) circulation control, including specific circulation routines that are automated, the type of equipment used, automation of overdues and membership files, other routine output, conversion of library stocks, and circulation control management information provided; (4) the effect of automation on library staffing, and staff responsiblities for computerized operations; and (5) current computer support for libraries in relation to other local government departments, and library automation objectives and planning.
