And Others Accidents Antisocial Behavior Censorship Guidelines Library Material Selection Problems Public Libraries Records (Forms) This document presents guidelines for handling disruptive behavior in the Schenectady County Public Library (New York). Specific responses are listed for dealing with questions about library selection policy and sudden patron illness or injury. Also listed are responses to problem situations involving angry or irate patrons, assault or physically threatening patrons, chatty patrons who distract staff members, disruptive children, unattended or lost preschool children, the consumption of food or beverages in the library, disruptive patron behavior, patrons dependent on drugs or chemicals, drunks, emotionally/mentally disturbed patrons, patrons with bare feet or who place feet on tables or chairs, loiterers, panhandlers or solicitors on library premises, persons who bring pets into the library, purse snatchers, sexual deviants, sleeping patrons, "smelly" patrons, smokers, suspicious behavior, teenage gangs, theft of library materials or property, vandalism, and verbal abuse. A list of useful telephone numbers and information on the library chain of command is provided. Appendices present helpful hints on dealing with problem behavior; information on legal responses to problem behavior and self-defense techniques; sample forms used for staff reports of accidents, disturbance, or vandalism, or for patron requests for reconsideration of library materials; and sample flyers listing the rules of the library.
