Language Enrichment Parent Participation Primary Education Program Descriptions School Publications Staff Development Student Developed Materials Student Motivation Student Participation Writing Improvement Writing Instruction Writing Readiness First implemented in 1980, the Ganado Language Arts Development (GLAD) Project is a kindergarten through grade 3 writing program that has published 31 volumes of student writing. Three primary goals guide the project: (1) to develop the foundation for literacy in each of its students, (2) to expand and enrich the pedagogical competencies of each staff member in the teaching of the language arts, and (3) to develop and strengthen parental awareness of and support for school programing. Students are provided with opportunities for an abundance of writing, in many forms, for many purposes, and for many audiences. To encourage the students to view writing as a meaningful experience, books written by individual classes, by grade levels, and by schoolwide writing competitions are regularly published at the district's curriculum center. During 1982, a newspaper was added to the project. In addition to books, newspapers, complaint forms, pen pal projects, and schoolwide competitions, the school has also sponsored the "Joke of the Day" and the "Word of the Day." Teachers foster a writing environment that encourages composition by withholding extensive critical evaluations, by demonstrating sensitivity to the student's cultural identity, and by implementing frequent and varied writing and publishing experiences. Staff members' competencies are enriched through a series of writing seminars, a classroom support network, and the establishment of a professional library. In addition, student-created reading materials and school newspapers are sent to the homes of the young authors. (HOD) |
