contents Public Services Study Report. One of a Series of Self-Studies and Research Projects. College Libraries Higher Education Library Collections Library Facilities Library Instruction Library Personnel Library Planning Library Research Library Services Self Evaluation (Groups) User Satisfaction (Information) One in a series of reports on public service studies by academic libraries that are being administered by the Office of Management Studies (OMS) of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), this report on the self study of the Michigan State University Libraries includes a brief description of the overall project and an executive summary of the Michigan study, both prepared by OMS. The summary presents the purpose of the study--to make recommendations for both "fine tuning" existing programs and defining key strategic concerns for future development; lists the major issues studied by the six task forces--distribution and use of staff, library instruction, facilities, periodicals access and control, undergraduate services, and user needs; and provides an overview of the resulting recommendations in four areas--facilities, services, staff, and collections. The report from the Michigan study team includes the formal charge to the team, a list of participants, a brief introductory statement, and the 76 recommendations made by the team. In Appendix I, which is included in this volume, a review of the activities of the study team introduces a report by the subcommittee on the library and its environment; an inventory of public services prepared by two members of the team; a description of the methodology used to identify the major issues to be addressed; and charges to the individual task forces. Listed in the table of contents as Appendix II, but not included in this volume, are the task force reports, which are available separately from OMS. (DMC)
