Archives Futures (of Society) Information Networks Information Scientists Library Science Literature Reviews Professional Education Research and Development Surveys Technological Advancement Use Studies User Satisfaction (Information) Prepared under contract with the International Council on Archives (ICA), this study is intended to assist archivists and information specialists in creating, developing, and evaluating modern archival systems and services, particularly with reference to the concept and the role of the user in such systems and services. It ranges over a wide field in an attempt to place archival services and the user within the context of available communication techniques and analogous developments for library science. The archival profession is in need of its own user studies and it is hoped that this preliminary survey of themes in the literature will not only be of some immediate practical value, but also will generate specific, scientific research on the subject. Ten broad topics are covered: (1) the nature of the problem; (2) information, the user, and the universe of knowledge; (3) user needs and user behavior; (4) the prelude to service--surveys, appraisal, acquisition; (5) the user in the search room--improving manual systems; (6) machine readable archives; (7) automation in the search room; (8) networks; (9) beyond the search room--extension services; and (10) the user and the future--education, research and development. A bibliography is also provided. (DMC) |
