Course Content Curriculum Development Educational Philosophy English Curriculum English Instruction Language Arts Learning Activities Literature Appreciation Oral Language Reading Skills Secondary Education Writing Processes Writing Skills Developed by teachers to provide a district-wide description of English course content, this curriculum guide is intended for use as a basis for planning instructional activities in a number of areas. The guide consists of four main sections: (1) an introduction, which provides a statement of philosophy, a scope and sequence of skills within English courses, and brief course descriptions; (2) discussions of the writing process, of effective writing programs, and of effective reading programs; (3) a taxonomy of skills sequenced according to the grade level in which each is introduced, taught, reinforced, and maintained; and (4) course descriptions providing course goals, objectives, concepts and skills, and suggested methods, activities, and materials. Appendixes contain descriptions of Bloom's taxonomy, a definition and designation of college preparatory English courses that meet the specifications of the California State University system, a statement of the English preparation necessary for admission to the University of California system, a list of graduation requirements for Hayward High School, lists of materials for precollege reading, lists of materials available from the high school library, and a scoring guide for student written work.
