Academic Libraries Higher Education Library Acquisition Library Extension Library Surveys Public Support Research Libraries This kit, an updated version of a 1974 publication, resulted from a survey of Friends of the Library Organizations commissioned by Tulane University in 1974. All members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) were surveyed with a mailed questionnaire. The survey analysis is based on the 63 ARL members who responded, 33 of whom had Friends organizations. The data showed that: Friends organizations tended to be either well-established or recently founded; in most cases library staff was involved in the organization's founding in combination with alumni and faculty; organizations ranged in size from 73 to 2,500 members with a mean of 621; most had four or more membership categories with membership costs varying greatly between organizations; direct financial support from the library was unusual; frequently named activities included fund-raising programs, publications, building special collections, regular meetings, community awareness and support campaigns, lectures and social events; and frequently cited problems included lack of membership, financial concerns, policy or authority disputes, and work overload of library staff. The SPEC kit contains selected materials from survey respondents, including two reports from Friends organizations, eight examples of constitutions and by-laws, six samples of brochures, a committee report of a Friends' planning group, and an analysis of the survey data.
